Meet the Head Tummy Tail Family
Each character guides learners through different aspects of the handwriting journey with fun and encouragement
Head Letters
These are the tall letters that stretch up high. They reach all the way to the head line at the top. Head letters show learners how tall letters should be. The head letters are (b, d, f, h, k, l, t) Letters that “Touch the head!”
Guides the upper boundary for all capital letters and tall lowercase letters, ensuring consistent height.
Tummy Letters
These are the small letters that sit snugly in the middle. Tummy reminds us where the main part of our letters should sit, making sure they are all the same size. The Tummy Letters are (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z) “Tummy letters wear a shirt—they stay cozy in the middle!”
Establishes the core body height for all lowercase letters, promoting uniformity and readability.
Tail Letters
These are the letters with long tails that hang down below the line. They dip under the tummy line into the tail zone. These letter are (g, j, p, q, y). “Tail letters wag their tails—they love to explore below!” Tail letters add movement and fun, reminding kids that some letters dip down.
Indicates the lower boundary for letters with descenders, helping children understand letter formation below the baseline.
Why Choose Head Tummy Tail?
The HTT Handwriting System: A Fun, Visual Way to Learn Letter Formation
The Head, Tummy, Tail (HTT) Handwriting System is a child-friendly approach to teaching handwriting that uses a three-line visual guide—Head, Tummy, and Tail—to help young learners understand where each part of a letter belongs.
a. Head Line: Where tall letters like b, d, and h reach.
b. Tummy Line: The middle zone where most lowercase letters like a, c, and e sit.
c. Tail Line: Where letters with descenders like g, j, and y extend below.
This intuitive layout helps children:
d. 🧠 Visualize letter structure more clearly
e. ✍️ Place letters accurately on the line
f. 🧒 Build muscle memory for consistent strokes
g. 🎉 Enjoy learning with playful mascots that guide and encourage
By turning handwriting into a visual and spatial game, the HTT system makes writing easier, more fun, and more successful for early learners. It’s especially helpful for children who are just starting to write or who struggle with letter sizing and placement.
